This prospective study aimed to compare the incidence of rebound in participants with acute COVID-19 infection, categorized as receiving NPR treatment or not.
A prospective observational study was performed, including participants who tested positive for COVID-19 and were clinically eligible for NPR, to assess outcomes related to viral or symptom clearance, and rebound situations. Depending on their decision to engage with NPR, participants were placed into the treatment or control group. Upon initial diagnosis, both groups received a regimen of 12 rapid antigen tests, mandated for regular use over 16 days, and required to complete symptom surveys. The study assessed the interplay between viral rebound, determined through test results, and COVID-19 symptom rebound, as recorded by patients themselves.
In the NPR treatment group (n=127), the incidence of viral rebound reached 142%, substantially exceeding the 93% observed in the control group (n=43). The rate of symptom rebound was substantially higher among participants in the treatment group (189%) compared to those in the control group (70%). A comparative analysis of age, sex, pre-existing conditions, and major symptom classifications revealed no significant variations in viral rebound during the initial acute stage or at the one-month interval.
This initial study's findings suggest a stronger post-clearance rebound following a positive test or symptom resolution than previous reports indicated.
